Academically speaking, cycling is tops for health
This paper by Dr Harry Rutter seems a tad localized (it's about Oxford); but it's stuffed with loads of 'cycling is good for you' facts. Yes, it's hard going in parts, because it's a scientific paper, but it's possibly the single best source on the internet for why cycling makes sense.
